VOLVO’S entrant in the medium prestige sports utility vehicle market, the XC60, is as safe as it is good looking. At the introduction last year, the T6 petrol variant was top dog offering superb performance to a great sound track.
That’s changed with the arrival of a new 2.4-litre, diesel five-cylinder that replaces the previous 2.4-litre diesel five. It’s a bit confusing but if you buy a new 2010 model D5, it has the new engine and is a better proposition than the previous unit.
On the road, the XC60 is a pleasant drive, not too big and with tidy manners. It steers with precision and has powerful brakes. But paddle gearshift is missing and the test vehicle had an annoying low frequency rumble at the highway speed limit possibly due to tyres or the drive system.

The new Volvo XC60 – better value than ever

Volvo’s new XC60 is the latest addition to the increasingly popular crossover market segment. And Volvo Car Ireland tells us that it is better value than ever.
With an entry level price of €44,267 ex-works, the DRIVe XC60 S 2.4D manual variant boasts CO2 emissions of 159g/km. And it slots in to Band D tax, which adds up to an appealing package. It also offers best-in-class fuel consumption.
The XC60 is a really nice car. And thankfully Volvo has retained the sporty driving properties that are a central part of this car’s attraction. More horsepower, higher torque and a sporty chassis setting all help give this version the right XC60 dynamics.
In addition to front-wheel drive, a number of minor improvements all help deliver the new model’s competitive fuel consumption and CO2 figures.
The gear ratios have been optimised so the car can be driven economically. For instance, when driving at 100km/h in top gear, engine revs and thus also fuel consumption are lower with the new powertrain. But the beauty of it is, you get all these improvements without compromising on driving pleasure.
The XC60 is not all about economy and ‘eco’ pluses. For instance, it achieved five stars in recent Euro NCAP crash tests, while in the appeal stakes it looks fantastic.
To demonstrate the wide appeal that this car has, the XC60 took first prize in the “Family Car of the Year” category in the first-ever Women’s World Car of the Year competition.

The all-new Volvo S60 is less premium saloon, more four-door coupe – and promises to be the most exciting Volvo yet.
Some might suggest that isn’t saying much, but Volvo really is placing an emphasis on the new S60’s driving prowess. The new Dynamic chassis will provide 10% faster steering input and much stiffer suspension.
Volvo’s existing Four-C active chassis system, which uses sensors to continually monitor the car and adjust the damping accordingly, will be available as an option on all new S60 variants. This gives a choice of Comfort, Sport and Advanced settings.
In common with the latest trend for executive transport, the all-new Volvo S60 is billed as a four-door coupé, rather than a traditional saloon.
It is certainly very swoopy, with flowing curves that Volvo refers to as ‘racetrack design’. LED lights feature front and rear, along with prominent contrast colour skid plates.
On the inside the sporty theme continues with instruments angled towards the driver, although this doesn’t come at the cost of passenger comfort. The S60 is still a full five-seater with an extra 30mm of rear knee space compared with the outgoing model.
There are plenty of storage options, the rear bench splits 40/60 and the boot opening is 100mm wider than before. The new electronic climate control includes an air quality system and a function that starts venting excess heat from the car as soon as the doors are unlocked.
All the usual premium refinements are available, including a high-tech infotainment centre, stereo upgrade option, parking cameras and adaptive cruise control.

2010 Volvo XC60: Annoying Backup Camera Warning
No comments · Posted by admin in Volvo XC-60 Reviews
Most vehicles fitted with navigation systems have some sort of disclaimer about how one shouldn’t use the navigation system while driving. A smaller percentage of cars also have warnings about their backup cameras. OK, sure, I understand that we live in a litigious society and there is a subsequent need for such things. But the warning that pops up for our 2010 Volvo XC60′s review camera display is particularly annoying.
Put the XC60 into reverse and the camera’s view pops up on the navigation screen. But the top one-fourth of the display is taken up by a legal disclaimer. This text blocks the camera’s view of what’s about to come into to the Volvo’s path. You can still see what’s directly behind you, so it’s not all bad. But for parking-lot situations where you are wondering if a car is coming down a lane, it’s just about worthless.
The warning goes away after about 5 seconds, and it only comes up the first time you put the Volvo in reverse. But the first 5 seconds is exactly when most people are actually planning on backing up, and typically you’re only putting a car in reverse one time for any given trip. The solution to all this is to just wait for the warning to go away or just not bother using the camera at all. But overall I’ve found this issue to be the most annoying on a day-to-day basis for our long-term XC60.

The XC60 project is targeted to customers with high demands on design, brand integrity and high-tech content. According to Volvo the XC60 exterior was conceived as a mix of two car styles. The lower part is characterized by muscular and bold volumes, with large wheels and high ground clearace. Up above, the flowing lines and sleek profile create the sporty look and visual impression of a coupé.

In March, the all new Volvo XC60 will go on sale in the United States. Launched this fall in Europe, the XC60 is Volvo’s entry in the “small premium utility segment,” where it will take on the likes of the BMW X5, the Acura RDX, the Audi Q5, and the Infiniti EX35. Hoping to build on its “safety first” image, Volvo has added measure of performance and fun to its newest vehicle, emphasizing styling, high-tech content, and all-around capability.
BOLDER STYLING, BOTH INSIDE AND OUT
The XC60 is the first production vehicle to reflect Volvo’s new design DNA. With a strong face featuring a larger logo and grille and a broader shoulder line, the XC60 has a more sporty, muscular stance than its Volvo brethren. Yet the XC60 is clearly a Volvo, an indication that the designers have successfully integrated traditional Volvo styling cues into its new design language.
Inside the cabin, the slim floating center stack, which debuted in the S40, is attractively finished in your choice of matte wood or brushed metal and is slightly canted toward the center to give the driver the feeling of being in a cockpit. The sculpted seats are upholstered in two-tone leather stitched in a pattern that Volvo calls its X-theme. “Cross County, Cross City, or Cross Over – choose the interpretation that suits you best,” says Jonathan Disley, head of interior design for the XC60. As with all Volvos, the seats themselves are pretty much the best in the business, being not only supportive but supremely comfortable.
The surfaces inside the cabin are nicely finished, with a visually interesting mix of contrasting materials, including leather, soft-touch plastics, brushed metal, and wood. Headroom is plentiful in all seating positions, and rear seat legroom is acceptable, especially if you’re less than six feet tall.
The XC60′s rear tailgate opening is the widest in the segment, according to Volvo. With the 40/20//40 second row folded flat, you should find room for just about anything you need to haul home from the mall or the garden center. Even with the second row upright, the XC60 olds a relatively generous 30.8 cubic feet of cargo.
