Volvo C30 will become crossover

The Vice President of Volvo, Lex Kersemakers, confirmed to the newspaper Carsguide, the company is working on a new compact five-door crossover based on the model C30, which will be available in 2012. Vehicle information is still missing but presumed that it will be offered the same set of engines as the Volvo XC60.

VOLVO XC60: DRIVER ALERT CONTROL

Volvo has developed a driver alert safety feature that you can experience in the new XC60. The feature uses a camera to monitor the cars movements between the road markings and assesses whether the vehicle is being driven in a controlled way. Road test: Volvo XC60 D5 diesel

VOLVO’S entrant in the medium prestige sports utility vehicle market, the XC60, is as safe as it is good looking. At the introduction last year, the T6 petrol variant was top dog offering superb performance to a great sound track.

That’s changed with the arrival of a new 2.4-litre, diesel five-cylinder that replaces the previous 2.4-litre diesel five. It’s a bit confusing but if you buy a new 2010 model D5, it has the new engine and is a better proposition than the previous unit.

On the road, the XC60 is a pleasant drive, not too big and with tidy manners. It steers with precision and has powerful brakes. But paddle gearshift is missing and the test vehicle had an annoying low frequency rumble at the highway speed limit possibly due to tyres or the drive system.

Volvo sales storm ahead in February

Drivers of used Volvo cars may be interested to note that the manufacturer enjoyed particular success in February, with registrations more than 90 per cent up compared with the same month in 2009.

With 1,378 registrations and a market share of 2.01 per cent, Volvo has also seen heightened performance of all models across the range, particularly the XC90 seven-seat SUV, S80 executive saloon and XC60 crossover.

The XC90 hit the top spot in February, with registrations increasing more than threefold compared with the previous year’s figures, while Volvo XC60 crossover registrations were up by 115 per cent.

Volvo Cars’ active safety system German ADAC test winner

The largest automotive organisation in world, German ADAC, has carried out an extensive comparison test of different automatic speed and distance control systems.
Volvo XC60 clearly won the test in which six different models were compared.
“ADAC has carried out a total judgment which included the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) as well as the Distance Alert and City Safety. As far as I know this is the first time a test evaluates the total effect of those safety enhancing functions,” says Jonas Ekmark, Active Safety Hub Leader at Volvo Cars.
The exceptional position of City Safety is underlined by the fact that this system is not only unique in the whole world, but it is also in mass production in the current Volvo XC60.

Volvo unveils touchscreen rear entertainment with 500GB and WiFi ??

In-car entertainment turned it up another wireless notch at last week’s Chicago Auto Show when Volvo showed off “the industry’s first Internet connected Rear Seat Entertainment System with Windows XP, WiFi and a 500G hard drive.”

Officially, it remains a test-bed study for the moment, but the idea is that you can do everything on a rear headrest touchscreen that you can do on your home computer. You can also plug your computer into the car and load the XC70’s system with your own music and video to keep things quiet in the back row. While it’s officially only in the ‘conceptual phase,’ we have it on very good authority that the system will be available in 2011 Volvo XC60 and XC70 models beginning this summer.
